The literal translation of kendo is “The Way of the Sword” (剣, ken, “sword”; 道 Dō, “the Way”). Kendo is a very effective way to develop Ki’ai (vital energy). Ki’ai is necessary to maintain a high level of keen emotion which enables one to keep an alert mind. We train in Kendo not to master the art but to master oneself. In Kendo, one is forever conscious of cutting and striking in the attitude of killing, and yet, a true master of Kendo understands Ainuke (mutual withdrawal, compassion, and realization).
